The first treasure from Słuszków near Kalisz, discovered in 1935, is the largest assemblage of late varieties of cross denarii. Its preserved part counts more than 13 thousand coins, as well as ornaments and silver cakes. The deposit was hidden in the early years of the 12th century. It contains, among other things, 120 specimens of the extremely rare large denarii of the Palatine Sieciech, with his mark on the obverse and a cavalier cross on the reverse. Comparative analysis of the governor’s coins and cross denars has made it possible to link a large group of hitherto anonymous crosses, previously attributed by most researchers to the Saxon workshop, to the Polish mint. On the basis of studies of cross denars from the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries from the Słuszko I treasury, a new classification of these coins has been presented, as well as their metrology, chronology and origin. The publication brings us closer to the period of dynamic development of the Polish mint during the reign of Władysław Herman and his son Zbigniew.
